Watch: how we grow clean plants

What GZ means

Most transplants are grown from cuttings or seed lines that have been propagated over and over, picking up viruses and other pathogens along the way. We start over.

1

Clear one plant

We select a single mother plant and clear it of pathogens in the lab.

2

Multiply it cleanly

That one clean plant is multiplied by automated tissue culture, so every copy starts clean.

3

Grow it out

Plants are hardened off as transplants and sent to you ready to go in the ground.

The history of meristem isolation

Growing clean plants from a meristem, the tiny growing tip of a plant, isn't new or experimental. It's more than 70 years of proven science, with no genetic modification.

  1. 1902Gottlieb Haberlandt first attempts plant tissue culture.
  2. 1922William Robbins grows isolated root tips in culture.
  3. 1934Philip White keeps tomato root cultures growing indefinitely.
  4. 1949Limasset and Cornuet find that the growing shoot tip, the meristem, carries very little virus.
  5. 1952Georges Morel and Claude Martin grow the first virus-free plants (dahlias) from meristems.
  6. 1960Morel uses meristem culture to mass-produce orchids.
  7. 1962Murashige and Skoog publish the growth medium labs still use worldwide.
  8. 1975Navarro, Roistacher and Murashige improve shoot-tip grafting, a way to produce virus-free citrus.
  9. TodayPhoenix Ebra brings it to Florida, with in-house pathogen testing and automation.

Frequently asked questions

What is a GZ (Generation Zero) plant?

A GZ plant is grown from a single mother plant that we clear of pathogens in our lab in Lake City, Florida. That one clean plant is multiplied by automated tissue culture, so every transplant starts from the same clean source instead of from stock that has been propagated over and over.

Why does starting from a clean plant matter?

Cuttings and seed lines that are propagated again and again can pick up viruses and other pathogens along the way. Starting from a cleared mother plant means our transplants don't carry those problems forward into your garden.

Which plants can I pre-order, and what do they cost?

Roma Tomato, Beefsteak Tomato and Sun Gold Tomato are $5 for a single plant, $14 for a 3-pack and $25 for a 6-pack. Green Bell Pepper, Red Bell Pepper, Yellow Bell Pepper, Cucumber, Yellow Summer Squash, Zucchini and Sugar Baby Watermelon are $3 for a single plant, $8 for a 3-pack and $15 for a 6-pack. Each 3-pack and 6-pack is a single variety.

When will my plants arrive?

This is a presale. You pay when you order, and plants ship or are delivered between April and June 2027. We'll email you before your order ships, or to schedule local delivery.

Where do you deliver for free?

We deliver free to ZIP codes within about 60 miles of Lake City, Florida, including Lake City, Live Oak, Lake Butler, High Springs, Alachua, Gainesville, Starke, Macclenny, Orange Park, Middleburg, Green Cove Springs and many Jacksonville ZIP codes, plus parts of south Georgia such as Valdosta, Lake Park, Fargo, Homerville and Folkston. The shop page has a ZIP checker, and checkout confirms your delivery option.

How much is shipping outside your delivery area?

Shipping is a flat $15 per order anywhere else in the United States. We currently ship within the US only.

Can I order in bulk?

Yes. Bulk orders are $1.50 per plant, with a minimum of 100 plants of each variety you order. Bulk orders are delivered locally, within our free delivery area only.

What happens if you can't ship my order in time?

If we can't ship or deliver your order by June 30, 2027, we refund you in full, including any shipping charge. You don't need to ask.

Do you charge sales tax?

Under Florida rules, plants that produce food for human consumption are exempt from sales tax, so Florida orders aren't charged sales tax on plants. Where tax does apply, it's calculated at checkout.

Do you sell gift certificates?

Yes. Gift certificates come in $10, $25, $50 and $100, or any amount from $5 to $500, and work for plants and soil testing at PhoenixEbra.com. They never expire and have no fees. We email the certificate to the buyer, and you can choose to email it to the recipient too.
